Embedding Compliant Business Practices
A pharmaceutical company with multiple franchises and a large sales force was facing a compliance challenge that is common but rarely solved well: how do you keep thousands of people up to date on complex, fast-changing guidelines when they are in the field every day, under pressure to perform, and have little patience for standalone training programmes? The Healthcare Compliance Office was doing its part — updating policies, running periodic training — but the sales organisation saw it as a bureaucratic function, disconnected from the reality of day-to-day selling.
We worked with the client to shift compliance from an event into an environment. The centrepiece was an iPhone app built around the specific scenarios sales reps encounter — each scenario mapped to the relevant compliance guidelines, accessible at the moment of need. Instead of asking reps to remember what they learned in a training session weeks ago, the tool put the right information in their hands at the right time, indexed by activity rather than by policy.
The response from the field was strongly positive, and the initiative transformed the perception of the Compliance Office across the organisation — from a function that constrained behaviour to one that enabled it. That shift in perception is the real outcome. Compliance that people resent rarely holds. Compliance that people find genuinely useful becomes part of how the organisation works.
